Essex Gun Masters: photographing action in changing light

At the 2019 Essex Gun Masters, Helen used two cameras on tripods with remote releases to cover the action consistently. The arrangement also made it possible to produce a useful angle for left-handed competitors, who can otherwise be poorly served by a fixed position.

The technical challenge was the rapidly changing weather. Exposure needed continuous attention: ISO and exposure compensation shifted with the available light, while a fast shutter speed helped hold the action and a smaller aperture kept enough of the scene in focus.

The final essential was less technical but just as important—a rain cover that allowed the cameras to keep working through the conditions. It remains a good example of field photography being equal parts preparation, observation and adaptation.
